In 2019 I travelled to Guiyang, China to volunteer with the Optimal Maternal Positioning (OMP) team. I packed my rebozos, essential oils, herbs, and a heart wide open. Nothing could have prepared me for the depth of learning that unfolded.
The hospital
We moved through wards where birthing people laboured behind curtains with stoic determination. With permission, we offered position changes, gentle hip squeezes, and the simple magic of eye contact. OMP's philosophy—create space in the pelvis so baby can dance their cardinal movements—came alive in real time.
The families
Some spoke English, many did not. Touch, breath, and shared laughter became our language. I watched partners transform from nervous bystanders into confident, loving guardians. I also saw how much birth workers around the world crave community and ongoing education.
Coming home
I returned to Meanjin with a suitcase full of tea and a heart full of gratitude. The experience deepened my commitment to culturally safe care and to meeting families exactly where they are.

May we continue learning from one another, across oceans and cultures, in service to birthing people everywhere.
